In this blog post, we will talk about 10 things to keep in mind when interviewing for a job as a graphic designer!

1) What is your favorite type of project?

This question gives the employer a chance to figure out what you like and dislike, as well as showing that you are passionate about design. You should find something in their portfolio or work history or description they gave on LinkedIn/the job listing which sparked an interest for you- this will show them how much.

Good answer example:

I really enjoy designing logos, and I feel like they are a great way to introduce the personality of an organization.

2) What is your favorite program to use for graphic design?

This question is asking you which software tools they prefer to use on a regular basis at their current or former job(s). It can tell employers about the type of design work you’re comfortable with doing- for instance, if someone wants to create web graphics but doesn’t have any experience using Adobe Suite programs, then this could be an issue. They want designers that will complement the skill set already existing in-house; it’s best not to mislead from the start. You don’t need to know how to do everything available out there (unless they ask).

Good answer example:

InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop are my favorites.

3) What are your thoughts on design trends?

This is very subjective; it’s best to answer based on what you personally like. If the interviewer likes modern, minimalistic designs but they’re also hiring for a logo designer position and you don’t prefer or enjoy creating that style of work, then this might be an issue for them- there needs to be consistency in order to create a cohesive product.

Good answer example:

I’m always trying new things and I think trends can help with inspiration! It depends on what type of project I’m working on as well- sometimes more experimental styles fit better whereas other times traditional looks may suit their needs better.

4) What is your favorite type of project?

My favorite types of projects are ones that allow me to use my design skills and creativity in unique ways. I like coming up with new ideas, creating something original, and using a variety of different techniques as well.

Good answer example:

I love when the client needs someone who can bring them an unusual product or vision because it’s so much fun for me! When they ask for this type of work specifically, then I know that we’re on the same page about what we want from each other.

5) What do you think is your biggest strength?

This question can be a difficult one because it’s hard to know what the hiring manager might want. But I feel like my strongest point would be that I’m very creative and always come up with new ideas, which means I’m not stuck in old conventions or styles of design- but instead keep things fresh!

6) Have you ever been employed by an advertising agency?

This question can be difficult because it’s hard to know what the hiring manager might want- but I feel like my strongest point would be that I’m very creative and always come up with new ideas, which means I’m not stuck in old conventions or styles of design- but instead keep things fresh! Plus, being a part of a big agency gives me some great resources too; there are so many people at these companies who work on different projects depending on what each day brings them.

Good answer example:

Yes, I have. The most recent company that has hired me is XYZ Advertising Agency in Albany and they’re always looking for new talent to join their team of graphic designers.

7) Why did you choose to be a graphic designer?

This is a question that many graphic designers are asked during an interview. Their answer will give the interviewer insight into their professional career and what they have to offer in terms of experience and skill set. Graphic design professionals may not always come from a graphic arts background, but even if this isn’t the case, it won’t hurt them as long as they research how to best respond. Examples could be: “I love creating things,” or “I want to make memorable images.” The key here is making sure you’re honest with yourself about why you chose this profession so your response reflects who you really are – rather than just saying something because someone else would say it too.

Good answer example:

“I’m passionate about design, and I want to create something that’s memorable.”

8) Why do you want to work for us?

This is the question that gives you an opportunity to show how well you know this company, and why it’s a great fit for your skills. You can talk about any specific projects or products they might be working on now, their values as a company, what drew you to them in the first place- anything that will give the interviewer insight into where you see yourself fitting within their organization.

Good answer example:

I really like the way that you work with clients to meet their needs and create a partnership. I want to be able to help your company grow in this area, because it’s one of my skill sets.

9) Where do you see yourself in five years?

This is a question that many people are asked in an interview. It’s important to have a realistic and achievable answer, but also be confident about it so you don’t seem wishy-washy or with no ambition.

The interviewer wants to know if the candidate has their head on straight when it comes to future goals as well as what they want from this career opportunity at hand. The best way to show your dedication is by being specific- talk about how long you plan on staying and what kind of position you’re looking for within five years while still mentioning where you see yourself currently playing into that goal.

Good answer example:

“I’d like to stay here for another two years before I start my own business” or “Within five years, I would like to start my own business after gaining enough of experience from your company”

10) Do you have any questions for us?

This is the last question of an interview. It’s sometimes difficult to think of a question on the spot, but it can give your interviewer insight into what type of person they’re hiring and show that you care about their company as much as they do. Try asking how design has changed over time or if there are any similar designers they admire in order to get them talking about something close to their heart – and make sure not to ask anything too personal like where someone grew up or what their favorite color is!

Good answer example:

My favorite question to ask is, “I understand that this position requires a degree. What type of discipline should I pursue?” This allows me to prepare my own before I join the company.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is important to take the time to prepare for an interview. It’s a chance for you and your skill set to stand out from other applicants, so make sure you’re prepared!
